Trump. Trump. Trump. Trump. Trump. Trump… Trump. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE HIM!!!!
His most recent divisive plan was to ban all Muslim immigrants and refugees from entering the United States. He strictly targeted Muslim-majority countries such as Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Sudan. This is a clear depiction of xenophobia and it is no coincidence that this ban pertains to terrorism prevalent countries. This frustrates me because instead of using his power as President fairly and respectfully, he is being coercive, insolent and downright evil.
These helpless refugees are just trying to find a safe haven but NO, Donald Trump has the build walls and impose bans to keep them out. As the wonderful Meryl Streep expressed during her Golden Globe acceptance speech at the beginning of January 2017, “the instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life [because it] gives permission for other people to do the same thing.” Furthermore, she states “disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
We all lose – Now, how would she know that we all lose?
Let’s go back about seventy-five years ago. Nazi occupied Germany. Prospering America. Jewish refugees. During World War II, Adolf Hitler was the bully and he was using his powerful position to wreak havoc on others. Just like Donald Trump wants to Make America Great Again, Hitler promised his country for The Final Solution.
Jewish civilians were Hitler’s target. He only believed that one race should exist in the world – The Aryan Race. He called for the complete extermination of Europe’s Jewish community. Innocent Jewish people were forced out of their homes, obliged to wear nametags for identification, forced into ghettos and concentration camps and killed. The only reason: being Jewish. Let’s pause for a second and come back seventy-five years to present time. Muslim’s in Syria today are being forced out of their homes as well, they are living with an insufficient water and food source, they have no access to education and they are being killed. However, just like the Jewish refugees who were seeking safety in 1940’s, Muslims are seeking refuge as well. But they are being denied access. Their only reason: being Muslim.
I am writing this article to open people’s eyes to the echoes of the Holocaust that are occurring in Trump’s America. I use this obvious situation as an example to prove that history does repeat itself. Humans are prone to repeat the past due to “the fear of the unknown”.
